ماجرا از یک پست در پلتفرم Truth Social شروع شد؛ ترامپ بدون هیچ مقدمه‌ای نوشت: «انتظار دارم آیفون‌هایی که در آمریکا فروخته می‌شوند، همین‌جا ساخته شوند، نه در هند یا هر جای دیگر.» او برای این درخواست، یک ضمانت اجرایی نیز تعیین کرد: «در غیر این صورت، اپل باید تعرفه‌ای حداقل ۲۵ درصدی به دولت بپردازد.»

پیامدهای این اولتیماتوم به‌سرعت در بازارهای مالی نمایان شد. سهام اپل ۲٫۶ درصد سقوط کرد و این موج منفی، شاخص‌های اصلی بازار مانند S&P 500 و نزدک را نیز پایین کشید.
